Dejan Lovren ruled out until after the international break

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has been ruled out of the club’s next two league games due to injury.

Lovren admitted that he played through the pain of an issue with a muscle in his stomach during the World Cup, as he helped Croatia reach the final.

However, Croatia’s gain has become Liverpool’s loss as the Reds had to begin the season without their first choice defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s home clash with Brighton on Saturday evening, Jurgen Klopp revealed that Lovren is still not back in training, meaning he won’t feature against Brighton or Leicester City next weekend.

Klopp hopes to have Lovren back available for selection by the time Liverpool face Tottenham on September 15th, although whether he’d be selected likely depends on the form and fitness of Joe Gomez.

Gomez has partnered Van Dijk in Liverpool’s first two league games and has played very well and if he can continue his form over the next few weeks, it’s unlikely that Lovren will replace him, even when he’s fit again.
