Liverpool and Chiesa: January exit talk continues

Federico Chiesa is at the centre of fresh transfer talk after Italian outlet Calciomercato reported that Inter Milan, Lazio and Atalanta are interested in signing the Liverpool winger in January.

According to Calciomercato, Chiesa is prepared to leave Anfield once the window opens, though Liverpool have made no official comment on the claim.

The Chiesa January exit talk arrives at a difficult moment for the 28-year-old, who has not played a single minute for Liverpool this season because of injury and was left out of the club’s 25-man Champions League squad. He joined from Juventus in the summer of 2024 but made only two Premier League starts across two seasons under former manager Arne Slot.

Chiesa hopeful of a new start at Liverpool under Iraola

The departure claim is attributed to Calciomercato. Liverpool have not confirmed or denied any interest from the three Serie A clubs, and there is no indication from the player’s camp that a move is close.

Chiesa’s own recent words sit awkwardly alongside the speculation. Asked about his situation, he said:

“I don’t know, it is difficult to say [if this is a fresh start]. It is always a fresh start at the beginning of the year. It is football. This year, let us say it is a new chapter. There is a new manager, and I have to focus on that.”

He has also said he is happy at Liverpool, loves the club and the fans, and is focused only on Liverpool at the moment. For more background on how this story has developed, see our Chiesa exit update.

Tough start of the season for Chiesa

Chiesa’s absence through injury, combined with his omission from the Champions League list, means he has had no part in Liverpool’s season so far. That has shifted responsibility onto other attacking options, with the Bournemouth win and the earlier victory over Ipswich Town built without him in the squad at all. You can read how that forward line performed in our report on the Bournemouth win, and the selection calls detailed in the Bournemouth team news.

One player who has benefited from first-team opportunities this season is Rio Ngumoha, and he has spoken about the role Mohamed Salah played in his development. Ngumoha recalled Salah telling him:

“Rio, you know you’re a good player but to reach the top, you have to add the goals and assists.” He added: “But then over time, I saw him as a very good teammate and he was helping me a lot, so I can’t thank him much more.”

Ngumoha, who scored a late winner against Newcastle United in August 2025 to become Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer at 16 years and 361 days, has made five appearances this season and has two goals and one assist in 35 senior games.

What’s next for Liverpool and Chiesa

None of this changes the picture for Sunday, when Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield. It is a fixture the club needs to get right; they have won just twice in the league so far this season, against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth, and a response is overdue. Full team news and lineup details are covered in our City preview. Chiesa will not be involved, given his continued absence through injury.
